The world of FFIX, It consists of four major continents: the Mist Continent, the Outer Continent, the Lost Continent, and the Forgotten Continent. The vast majority of people in Gaia live on the Mist Continent, and very few travel to, or are even aware of, the other three continents that make up their world, largely because the main mode of transport, airships, run on mist, and mist only exists on the Mist Continent, meaning they cannot fly to other continents. this is where the FFIX characters should start their journey.

The savage world derives its name from that of the god Pulse. Its vast wilderness is populated by creatures ranging from the monstrous to the deadly, and its fal'Cie seem to have taken a decidedly less friendly approach toward human dealings than those of Cocoon, cultivating the land for settlement, but demonstrating little concern beyond that. At one time in its history, Gran Pulse was home to a thriving civilization and many great cities. Now it is home to many great ruins, and people are nowhere to be seen. FFXIII characters should start their journey here.

The world of Ivalice 1000 years after the events in FFXII. St. Ajora's holy stone war had laid waste to the world's technology, and kingdoms, but humanity still lived on. St. Ajora and his holy stone knights are regarded as the saviors of the world, but in actuality they were its destroyers. Now after the events of the Lion War and a failed second attempt at reviving St. Ajora and his knights, the world knows peace again.
